My Life of Riley
Hi, I’m Riley Davis*** and I’m a Wedding Coordinator. Did that sound a little 12-step ish? I have a few things to get off my chest. My friends tease me all the time. They say I’m living the ‘Life of Riley’, after all what could be bad… I own my business and my days are spent at the most luxurious resorts sharing a couple’s happiest moments. I get paid to attend to their weddings. What could go wrong?
Large 5 star resorts can handle more than one wedding at a time. They have multiple rooms of varying sizes and usually a few outdoor locations. The event coordinators at these resorts are professionals and truthfully I’ve never had a major incident that couldn’t be fixed seamlessly. Well, at least until this weekend. I’m sure, looking back at this, I hope someday it will be funny.
My clients Sheila Adamson and her fiancé Ben Abbot were getting married on the same day and time as Shelly Abramson. But that was about the only similarity. I was blissfully unaware of the Abramson wedding until a Rabbi began my client’s service that called for a Unitarian Minister. Problem.
With the bride and groom standing at the alter holding hands and looking lovingly into each other’s eyes, if it were not clear their carefully written vows were not being read then the Rabbi speaking Hebrew pushed it over the edge… but honestly how to put a stop a train wreck in progress? Finally when the Rabbi pronounced the wrong names and had Ben stomp on the glass uncomfortable laughter filled the room.
I was scrambling to get the site coordinator on the phone, needless to state she had her hands full with the Abramson party on the far side of the property. Finally, she had the correct officiate with the proper wedding party and the ceremony took place, again, as it was originally designed.
It turns out the Abramson and Adamson/Abbot ballrooms were next door to each other. The hotel handed out copious amounts champagne too both parties and they had a toast together. It was decided that both couples were doubly blessed and everyone turned out to laugh about the whole thing.
Weddings truly are blessed events, sometimes twice over…. this is my ‘Life of Riley.’
