Everything’s Just Peachy

My Life of Riley

Hi, I’m Riley Davis*** and I’m a Wedding Coordinator.  Did that sound a little 12-step ish? I have a few things to get off my chest.  My friends tease me all the time.  They say I’m living the ‘Life of Riley’, after all what could be bad… I own my business and my days are spent at the most luxurious resorts sharing a couple’s happiest moments.  I get paid to attend to their weddings.  What could go wrong?

Not every bride wears white.  Today I was helping out a woman who flew across country to get married. She and her fiancé have been living together for the past fifteen years so I had to ask her why she was suddenly getting married.  It was a heartwarming story about honoring her ninety year old grandfather who has been after her groom to “make an honest woman out of her” for the past decade or more.  We laughed together.

She chose a lovely, simple peach dress because they had been living together.  The ceremony was a small family gathering designed to celebrate the couple’s commitment.  Casual was the word of the day.

In truth, she only needed a wedding coordinator because she lived three thousand miles away, there was nothing elaborate or complicated about the wedding.  There was only one thing she asked of me which she was truly concerned about… a delicious wedding cake.  So, I went to the best place near here, a gourmet wedding cake place that normally services all the high-end venues in the area.  They were not used to doing small cakes.

“Just peach flowers with green accents” was all I asked for decorations and I think the designers were offended.  When they showed up on the morning of the event, the bride was already dressed (I mentioned this was casual, right.)  The cake artist was embarrassed and practically hyperventilated about the peach being the wrong color.  It didn’t match.

The bride and I tried to tell him it didn’t matter but he wouldn’t listen.  He insisted on driving the cake back to his bakery and repairing the color of the peach flowers.  It would ‘only’ take him two hours total.  There was no convincing him otherwise.

We stood there astonished as he drove away with a cake… This is my “Life of Riley”
