Are you having to travel for your big day and worried about how to pack your dress? Not to worry, we have some tips and tricks that’ll help ensure your dress get to where ever you’re going safe and sound!
Step 1: Speak with your airline! Though they may not guarantee anything, it’s nice for them to have all your travel detail so they can be better prepared. You may want to ask if there are closets in first class that you could possibly store your dress in but be prepared that you may have to purchase a ticket in first class to do so depending on their policies. Don’t be afraid to be persistent on how important it is that the dress of your dreams gets where you are going safely ladies!
Step 2: If for some reason the airline can not do anything to ensure the safety of your dress it’s time to take this matter into your own hands. You will have to pack up your dress as carefully as possible into a garment bag, speak to the boutique you bought the dress from originally on tips and tricks, occasionally they will even pack it up for you. If you are planning to pack the dress yourself, you need to first put the hanger through the garment bag and hang up your dress. You then take each side of the dress from the bottom and bring it into the center, and then you roll the dress. Starting from the bottom working your way up until it fits inside the bag. Lastly, as carefully as you can, you zip up the garment bag slowly, making sure you don’t snag any of the fabric.
Step 3: One way to get your dress on board, which hopefully you’ll have people willing to work with you on this as you won’t be the only one bringing carry on items to put overhead. You can either roll up the dress starting from the hangar down to store away or you can lay your dress flat over the luggage that’s inside if there is enough room to do so.
Step 4: The safety of your dress is very important, like major! It’s what’s going to make you stand out on your big day and all eyes are going to be on you. No pressure. One thing that you can do to ensure the safety of your dress at all times is get your dress it’s own seat. Yes, you read that right! What better way to be positive your dress is where it should be then laying in the seat right next to you! Side note ladies you can check to see if your flight is full and if it is not, just ask if you are able to put this precious cargo next to you.
Step 1: This option comes with similar worries about the dress being smooshed by other luggage or getting wrinkled. But you are able to manage its safety more by either laying over a seat (packed in the garment bag the same way explained for flying) or laying it over the luggage packed in the car.
Step 2: Some dresses are sent in a box already to you from when you purchased it. But of course you have had to have taken it out to try it on again out of pure excitement to see yourself in it before the big day, and of course a fitting here and there. While unpacking it from the box, try to remember you have to get it back in the box ,or just opt for the garment back and save yourself the trouble. Wait until the last minute to pack your dress back up and it is a good idea to use some rolled tissue within the folds to decrease creasing in the dress.
When you get to your destination!
DO NOT STEAM YOUR OWN DRESS!!!! Please leave this to the professionals, over the years we have heard horror stories and don’t get us started on what happens if the heat shrinks the dress… Worst case scenario if you do not have access to a professional dress pressing/steaming company, you can use the bathroom method. Make sure you keep your dress far from any water but you turn on the shower at high heat to get the room steamy and leave the dress inside until you see its perfectly wrinkle free! Keep in mind, the dress should not be inside the shower but hanging on a towel rack or robe hanger in the same room. Close the door and let the hot air work its magic for about 20-30 minutes.
